Campus Operations

The University is prepared to implement contingency plans and will continue to operate, should a strike by AFSCME Local 1110 (representing primarily janitorial, grounds, and dining positions on campus) occur on or after April 8, 2026.

The University is committed to continuing normal operations to the fullest extent possible, with student services our top priority. Details regarding any changes in services will be provided here and/or communicated directly to impacted parties as appropriate.

General Operations

Student housing and dining services

Students and parents who have paid room and board in order to receive services have reason to expect that their housing and dining services be fulfilled.

Maintaining dining services for students is a top priority for the University. Both dining centers (Watterson Dining Commons and Marketplace at Linkens) are open with regular hours.

Residence hall cleaning procedures

Cleaning of bathrooms, common areas, and other shared spaces within on-campus housing will continue. While cleanliness will be maintained, there may be minor adjustments to cleaning schedules. Any significant changes will be communicated to residents via email.

Student employment

Student employees are expected to work and should contact their supervisor regarding any questions about scheduling and support.

University employees

Services will be prioritized based on health and safety needs. Please manage your personal, office, and suite trash. If these waste bins are full, please place them in the hallway receptacle for pickup.  Help keep campus clean by using appropriate outdoor waste and recycling receptacles.  Please report any facilities-related concerns or issues to 309-438-5656.

Safety concerns

The SAFE Redbirds app is still active and the best place to submit a concern to be addressed. The form is located here.

Employee volunteers

Employees who are members of other unions can be requested to perform work normally performed by AFSCME 1110-represented employees but should not be required to perform this work.

During the emergency declaration, current university employees, including university staff who are members of other unions, are permitted to work outside of their classification to fill positions that are critical to maintaining service. If volunteers are necessary to continue operations, an interest form will be distributed. Employees may volunteer with permission from their supervisor.
